Benjamin Moore Regal Select Review

Benjamin Moore Regal Select is the second highest quality paint offered by the company. The product is on par with options like Sherwin Williams Duration and PPG Prominence. Today we will be taking a deeper look at Regal Select to understand the pros and cons of this paint in order to help you determine whether the product is right for your project.

COVERAGE

Benjamin Moore’s products have industry-leading coverage, and that is no different with Regal Select. Regal Select yields between 400-450 square feet per gallon, making it an excellent option if you want to reduce how much paint you need for a given project.

For comparison, Sherwin Williams’ Duration yields 250-300 square feet/gallon, and PPG’s Prominence offers 400 square feet and beyond.

That means Regal Select edges out Prominence and performs well beyond what is offered by Duration. Sheer coverage isn’t everything, though. While you won’t need as much paint to get full coverage, more coats allow the paint to shell up better for a harder and more uniform surface.

DURABILITY

Of the three products, Regal Select is also the most durable. We scuffed all the paint we tested with our feet and tried to burnish them with our fingers. We even took a magic eraser to them (which you should never do under any circumstances). Between all three tests, Regal Select came out on top.

While scuffing appeared on both Duration and Prominence, the scuffing hardly showed up at all on Regal Select. The same is true of the burnishing. The magic eraser did not clearly appear on all three products, which shows just how durable these products can be.

If you’re looking for the most durable paint, though, Regal Select is far and away the winner.

PRICE

So with great durability and coverage, that means Regal Select is a clear winner right? Well, while Regal Select is great, it’s also notably more expensive than the competition. A gallon of Regal Select retails at $78. That’s comparable to Duration’s retail price of $76/gallon, but you can regularly find it at a lower price.

Even when you factor in contractor pricing (like the kind we get), Benjamin Moore is substantially more expensive. The higher cost creates a diminishing return to the product’s benefits, even if it is better than the competition.

More often than not, because of our special contractor pricing, you can usually upgrade to something like Sherwin Williams Emerald – a higher quality product – for a lower price. If that deal is available, it’s definitely worth upgrading.

BENJAMIN MOORE REGAL SELECT – OUR RECOMMENDATION IN THIS RANGE

Of all three products, Regal Select is our favorite. It has excellent coverage and flow, and the paint is incredibly durable. It’s an excellent option for high-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens, and mud rooms.

It’s expensive, but if you’re looking for the absolute best in this product range, Regal Select is the option for you. However, you will be perfectly happy with Duration or Prominence if you want to save some money and still get quality products. And you will want to make sure you can’t get something like Emerald at a lower price.
