Why Are My Kitchen Cabinet Quotes All Over The Place?

Getting a quote on any part of your home can be stressful. After meeting with several contractors and getting estimates, you probably have several prices that wildly vary. That’s probably left you wondering, “why are my kitchen cabinet quotes all over the place?”

Simply put, you get what you pay for. If you want high quality, experienced painters who know the correct processes and use high-end products, you have to pay for it. With that being said, the best painters aren’t always the most expensive, and less costly quotes don’t always mean you’re going to get a shoddy result, but for the most part it’s true.

Here at Heritage Custom Painting we provide free estimates, color design, warranties and financing options. All of our crews are covered with worker’s compensation and liability insurance. All of these things help guarantee the quality of their work, but it’s also why we aren’t the cheapest painters around. We want to help demystify the quoting process, though. So here are a few reasons why you get such wildly different kitchen cabinet quotes.

WHY YOUR KITCHEN CABINET QUOTES ARE SO DIFFERENT

  • You’re dealing with bad or inexperienced contractors
  • The cost of labor will vary
  • The quality of products affects the price

BAD CONTRACTORS

Some contractors, unfortunately, are just bad actors. They are just trying to get as much out of you as they possibly can. Painters who force you to pay high deposits or ask you to purchase the paint yourself are a red flag. The best way to find out which contractors are being honest is by trying to communicate with them. Bad actors will have inconsistent pricing and will have trouble explaining exactly what they are charging you for. Some may not even tell you at all.

Communication is key, so here at Heritage Custom Painting we strive to communicate our processes and products to you every step of the way. We truly want you to have a five star experience. Quality communication is one of the things you should look out for when hiring a contractor.

LABOR

Labor is one of the biggest factors in a kitchen cabinet quote, or any contractor quote for that matter. The labor cost will vary depending on the size of the job and how long it is going to take.

The best way to think about labor is in terms of man-hours. A job may take 100 man-hours, and that’s the case whether one person a whole crew works on it. Most contractors will base their labor supplies on man-hours, and a good one will always explain it if you ask.

If you have questions about the labor, again always ask your contractor. They should be able to break it down for you.

SUPPLIES

Supply costs can vary for a number of reasons. The obvious price factor is quality. Contractors who use cheaper and lower-quality products will charge lower prices. If your contractor uses a high quality kitchen cabinet paint, you may pay a little more but the finished product will look better and last a lot longer.

Prices can also go up or down depending on shortages and other economic conditions.

You will also want to make sure you understand who is supplying the paint. Heritage Custom Painting always does, but your quote may look a lot cheaper if the contractor expects you to pay for the supplies. Paying for the supplies yourself is always more expensive because you are paying retail price for the product. Contractors usually have relationships with suppliers and will get the paint at a discount.

BONUS TIP: LOOK FOR WARRANTIES

Hiring a company who provides product knowledge, experienced painters, and warranties with their work is priceless. If there’s no warranty, they aren’t standing behind their products or their painters craftsmanship. There’s lots you can do to select the right company for your project. Ask lots of questions, do your own research about the products that will be used and the company you will be working with. Read reviews, ask for referrals and/or have the company show you a sample cabinet of their work.

And those are some of the factors affecting the price on your kitchen cabinet quotes. If you’re still looking for the right contractor, feel free to come into our office at Heritage Painting. We have sample cabinet shelves on display for you to view, and there is always someone here ready to chat.
