Can You Paint Aluminum Siding?
We get asked a lot if we can paint aluminum siding. A lot of people are under the impression that you can’t paint aluminum, or that the paint won’t stick to the surface right. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, aluminum siding is one of the best surfaces to paint, because the material doesn’t flex like wood or even vinyl. That means the paint is less likely to fail and will last for years to come.
Here’s everything you need to know about painting aluminum siding and some of the caveats to consider if you plan on doing it.

SHOULD YOU PAINT ALUMINUM SIDING?
There’s no reason not to do it. As we said above, it’s actually one of the most reliable surfaces to paint on because it doesn’t flex like wood siding. You also aren’t restricted to certain color choices like when you paint vinyl siding.
Just remember you want the surface to be very clean before you start painting, and that’s especially true for aluminum siding. If the surface is not properly cleared of dirt or debris, the paint will not adhere to the surface and will result in peeling and flaking. That’s why it’s important to power wash any exterior surface (not just aluminum) before painting.
CAN I SAVE MONEY PAINTING ALUMINUM SIDING?
Absolutely! Aluminum has a lot of great qualities. It’s durable and weather resistant, and it helps insulate your home. However, factory color tends to fade quickly on aluminum. You could replace the siding as the color dulls, but you would save thousands of dollars by simply painting it.
Saving money and being able to choose the color you want is one of the many reasons painting aluminum siding is such a great choice.
ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND
There is one caveat to painting aluminum over other siding materials. In most circumstances, contractors need the temperature to be at least 35 degrees for 24 hours prior to painting. For aluminum siding, though, it needs to be at least fifty degrees. That means the window for painting aluminum siding is dramatically shorter than the rest of the exterior season. Make sure you plan accordingly.
