Wallpaper Removal in Central Indiana
The first corner comes off in one satisfying sheet. That is the trap.
Wallpaper removal looks easy for about ten minutes, and then you meet the adhesive, or the second layer nobody knew about, or the drywall paper coming away with the pattern. We remove wallpaper in homes across Central Indiana, and we finish the walls afterward, which is the half of the job most people are actually asking about.
Why Professional Wallpaper Removal Matters
Peeling off a corner of wallpaper can make removal look easy, but anyone who has lived with half-stripped walls knows the truth:
- Adhesives can bond tightly to drywall and plaster
- Multiple layers of wallpaper are common in older Indiana homes
- Rushing the job can shred drywall paper or gouge the surface
- Leftover glue can cause paint failure, bubbling, and uneven texture
Professional wallpaper removal contractors understand how to protect the wall underneath while efficiently removing old material.
Done correctly, the room is ready for a fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper. Done poorly, it can require extensive repairs and add unexpected cost and time.
Heritage Painting approaches every removal project with patience, planning, and the same attention to detail we bring to our painting work.

What Is Actually Behind Your Wallpaper
Two very different worlds, and which one you have changes the whole job.
Drywall. The face of drywall is paper. Wallpaper adhesive bonds to that paper, and if the wall was never primed or sized before the paper went up, the two are effectively one material now. Pull too hard and the drywall face tears off with the pattern, leaving a fuzzy brown surface that has to be sealed and skim coated before it will take paint.
Plaster. Older homes around Central Indiana, the farmhouses and the pre-war houses in town, often have plaster over lath. Plaster survives moisture and scraping far better than drywall paper does, but it can be brittle at the edges and it hides cracks that only show up once the paper is gone.
Then there is the layer question. Papering over old paper was standard practice for decades, so a wall can carry two or three generations of pattern with different adhesives between them. Each layer responds differently to steam and solution, which is why a room that should have taken a day sometimes takes three.
There is one more variable that decides how the job goes: whether the wall was primed before the paper went up. A primed wall gives the adhesive something to release from. An unprimed one gives it drywall face paper to bond into permanently. You cannot see which you have from the room, but a test patch shows it in about fifteen minutes.
So why does one room strip in an afternoon and the one next door take three days?
Almost always the answer is layers, or an unprimed wall, or both. We test a small area first and tell you what we are dealing with before we commit to a method or a price, because quoting that blind helps nobody.
Our Professional Wallpaper Removal Process
Why DIY Removal Goes Sideways
Ever started a wallpaper project on a Saturday and still been looking at half-stripped walls two weekends later?
It is the most common home improvement stall we get called about, and rarely because anyone did anything foolish. The job simply has more steps than it looks like it has.
The usual causes are the same every time. Too much water, which swells the drywall. Too little patience, which shreds the surface. Aggressive scrapers that gouge. And the one that gets almost everyone: leftover adhesive. Residual glue looks invisible on a dry wall, and paint over it bubbles, crackles or refuses to bond weeks later. The room looks finished, then it does not.
There is no shortcut for washing the wall down properly. That is the step that decides whether the paint job holds.
If you would rather have a go yourself first, our guide on how to remove wallpaper walks through the steps, the tools and the point at which most people decide to stop. This page is for when you would rather hand the room to somebody else and get it back finished.
Wallpaper Types and How Each Comes Off
Traditional pasted paper. Usually the friendliest. Scores, soaks, and comes away in strips when it is given enough dwell time.
Vinyl and fabric-backed. The top layer often peels off dry, leaving the backing stuck to the wall. That backing is the real job, and skipping it is why paint fails over "removed" wallpaper.
Peel-and-stick. Modern and easier in theory. In practice the adhesive can grab a poorly primed wall hard enough to take the surface with it.
Multi-layer installations. Common in older homes. Each layer may need a different approach, and we work down through them rather than attacking all of them at once.
We match method to material: scoring where it helps, controlled moisture where it is safe, and hand tools chosen to protect the surface rather than get through it fastest.
Borders and accent strips deserve a mention of their own. A single border at ceiling height, or a chair-rail strip running a room, is often glued far more aggressively than the field paper around it. Removing one cleanly without wrecking the wall above or below it is fiddly work, and it is a common reason a homeowner stops mid-project and calls someone.
Steam is another judgment call rather than a default. It works well on thick, stubborn traditional paper. On thin drywall or aging plaster it can push moisture into places you do not want it, so we use it selectively and keep the wall in view the whole time.
From Bare Wall to Finished Room
Removal is the beginning. What makes the room look new is what happens next.
Once the paper and adhesive are gone, we remove residue and contaminants, patch cracks and nail holes, repair torn drywall face where the paper took some with it, and skim coat wherever the surface needs to come back flat. Then we prime. Priming seals whatever adhesive trace remains and gives the topcoat a consistent surface to sit on.
After that the room is ready for paint or for new paper. Because we handle interior painting and drywall repair ourselves, there is no gap between contractors where the blame for a bad finish can hide. One team owns the wall from the first strip to the final coat. If the ceiling has been bothering you too, popcorn ceiling removal is usually easier to do while the room is already protected and empty.
Our Wallpaper Removal Process
We work in homes throughout Tipton and the surrounding Central Indiana towns, from newer builds to farmhouses that have been papered over more than once.
Intake. Call (317) 385-1951 or reach us online with the rooms, the approximate age of the paper, and what you want the walls to become.
Assessment. A project consultant inspects the walls, identifies the paper type, tests a small area, and looks for signs of multiple layers or past repairs. You get a free itemized estimate with removal, repair, prep and finishing shown as separate lines.
Protection. Removal is messy work, so we cover floors and baseboards, move or wrap furniture, and block adjacent rooms from dust and debris. Crews clean up daily rather than at the end.
Removal and repair. Careful stripping, full adhesive removal, then patching, skim coating and priming as needed.
Finish and walk-through. Paint or new paper goes on, then your project manager walks the room with you against our checklist and handles anything that needs touching up.
You get a dedicated project manager, updates at least weekly, and honest reporting as layers come off, because what we find behind the paper sometimes changes the plan. We are a local, family-owned business, and licensed, bonded and insured.

Wallpaper Removal FAQ
How much does wallpaper removal cost?
It depends on the paper type, how many layers there are, and what condition the wall is in underneath. That is why we test an area before quoting rather than pricing by the square foot blind. The estimate breaks removal, repair and painting into separate lines so you can see what is driving the number.
Can you just paint over wallpaper instead?
Sometimes, and it is rarely the better answer. Seams and texture telegraph through the paint, and any loosening later takes the paint with it. Our guide to removing wallpaper goes through where that shortcut works and where it costs you. We will tell you honestly when a room is a reasonable candidate and when it is not.
Will my walls be damaged?
Some surface damage is normal, especially over unprimed drywall, and it is repairable. Repair and skim coating are part of the scope, so the wall you get back is smooth and paint-ready rather than merely stripped.
How long does a room take?
A single room with one cooperative layer can be done quickly. Multiple layers or fragile plaster take longer. We give you a realistic range at the estimate and tell you promptly if what we find changes it.
Do you hang new wallpaper as well?
Yes. If you want new paper rather than paint, we can prep the wall properly and install it.
